Auditions... 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Directed by Rick Simas.

First rehearsal is June 1, 2010.
Show closes August 8, 2010.

Three "adult" cast members (1 woman, 2 men), usually played by actors in their 30s or 40s, any ethnicity:
 

Rona Lisa Peretti: About 35 years of age, she is the #1 realtor in Putnam County, a former Putnam County Spelling Bee Champ and returning moderator.
 Soprano (C to A flat): quot;Opening," "Prayer of the Comfort Counselor," "The I Love You Song" (as Olive's mother).

 

Vice Principal Douglas Panch: About 40 years of age, Panch returns as judge after five years' absence from the Bee. There was an "incident" at the 20th Annual Bee, but he claims to be in "a better place" now, thanks to a high-fiber diet and Jungian analysis. No solo singing: "The Rules."

 

Mitch Mahoney: About 30 years of age, the Official Comfort Counselor. An ex-convict, Mitch is performing his community service at the Bee, and hands out juice boxes to losing students. Tenor (E to A): "Prayer of the Comfort Counselor," "The I Love You Song" (as Olive's Dad).

 

 

Six "child" cast members (3 girls, 3 boys), usually played by actors in their late teens to mid-20s, playing youngsters 12-15 years of age, any ethicity:

 

Olive Ostrovsky: A young newcomer to competitive spelling. Her mother is in an ashram in India, and her father is working late. Sweet, vulnerable, a little sad.
Soprano w/belt (B to F sharp): "My Friend, the Dictionary," "The I Love You Song."

 

Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre: The youngest and most politically aware speller, with two overbearing gay dads. She's a bit of a neat freak, has 2 very tight braids, speaks with a lisp, and will be back next year.
Character mezzo (C to D): "Woe Is Me."

 

Marcy Park: A recent transfer from Virginia, Marcy placed 9th in last year's nationals. She speaks six languages, is a championship rugby player, plays Chopin and Mozart, sleeps only 3 hours a night, hides in the bathroom cabinet, and is tired of always winning.
Mezzo with belt (B to E): "I Speak 6 Languages."

 

William Barfée: Called "Barfy," a Putnam County Spelling Bee finalist last year who was eliminated because of an allergic reaction to peanuts. His famous "Magic Foot" method of spelling has won him renown, even though he only has one working nostril. Character bari/tenor (E flat to B flat): Pandemonium," "Magic Foot."

 

Leaf Coneybear: The second runner-up in his district, Leaf gets into the competition by a fluke. He comes from a large family of former hippies and makes his own clothes. He spells words correctly while in a trance.
Character tenor (A to G): "I'm Not That Smart."

 

Chip Tolentino: A boy scout and champion of the 24th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee who returns to defend his title, but unfortunately experiences puberty at an inopportune moment.
Tenor (C to high B flat): "Pandemonium

 

Administrative Employment

Run Crew

North Coast Rep is seeking backstage crew personsfor the 2009-2010 season.  Run crew will work alongside the SM and ASM through the tech period, and run of the show. Duties would include handling props, costumes and assisting with scene changes. Experience is preferred. Pay is a $200.00 mileage reimbursement for rehearsal and $160.00 each performance week.

Assistant Stage Manager

North Coast Rep is seeking energetic and knowledgeable ASM's for the 2007-2008 season. Duties would include working alongside SM during rehearsal, tech and performance and running sound during performances. Production meeting attendance is encouraged. Must have previous ASM experience. Pay is a $400.00 mileage reimbursement for rehearsal and $200.00 each performance week. Internships

Marketing Internship

North Coast Repertory Theatre is seeking a qualified marketing assistant to work part time in our marketing department. The position includes: Sending weekly ads to publications/newspapers for mainstage, theatre school productions and general theatre advertising; managing production and special event collateral including, but not limited to, direct mail postcards, production posters, marquees, lobby and café photos; working with vendors to ensure theatre collateral is created, printed and distributed by specified deadline; organizing and filing theatre and production news clippings; creating cast folders of features, reviews and other notable clippings after each mainstage production; putting together press kits for theatre media; coding invoices; and other marketing duties as needed.


The Marketing Assistant will be responsible for general marketing duties with North Coast Repertory Theatre including: Data entry, filing, organizational, office and clerical tasks. Use of software programs including, but not limited to: Quark; In Design; Internet; Microsoft Office Word, Outlook, Excel, Picture Manager and PowerPoint are a plus.
