Each year The Theatre School @ North Coast Rep teams with communities throughout San Diego County to provide arts and education programs to children and teens of all backgrounds and socioeconomic levels.
Behind the Mask
Behind the Mask collaborates with many “in need” organizations such as The New Alternatives and Case de Amparo which provide safe guidance and support for children that come from abused homes. The Theatre School at North Coast Rep is creative pillar of support for these institutions that provide residential facilities for dependents of the Juvenile Court who have been removed from abusive or neglectful homes. We also work with ACES, a school which provides support for children with autism. Behind the Mask also works with senior citizens suffering from Alzheimer’s and Dementia in a collaboration with Silverado of Encinitas.
Our instructors provide weekly theatre classes in a safe and nurturing environment to children ages 7-17. Participants in the intensive seven-week sessions explore their imaginations and learn to express emotions in a creative and positive way.
This proven program, helps transform children from victims to self-aware and self-actualizing young adults, while also supporting memory recognition programs in senior citizens. Behind the Mask is funded by gifts from individuals, businesses, and foundations.
In-School Residency
This program provides students with exposure to the dramatic arts through a hands-on workshop in the classroom. Students spend several weeks studying a play and then attend a performance at North Coast Rep.
Workshops
Incorporate affordable professional instruction and directions in Story Dramatization, Creative Drama, Acting for the Stage, Advanced Acting, and Shakespearean workshops, into your classroom. Workshops are offered during and/or after school.
Drama in a Box
This is a unique improvisational workshop that allows students to create a dramatized version of a familiar stories based on props and costume pieces randomly pulled from a trunk.
Theatricum
This program involves students with hands-on experience in every facet of putting together a full production: costumes, sets, lights, and acting. Theatricums strengthen curriculum delivery and introduce young people to the pillars of American, Greek, and Shakespearean classics such as Thornton Wilder's Our Town, Shakespeare's The Tempest, or Aeschylus' Greek Classic Prometheus Bound.
Discounts/Special Programs
North Coast Rep offers special discounts for students to all of our productions, this includes both mainstage and Theatre School @ North Coast Rep productions. Also offered are internship programs for high school and college students.
Student Matinees and Forums
Throughout our season special weekday performances are scheduled enabling schools to attend live performances of productions on fieldtrips. Each student matinee is followed by a question and answer session with actors and directors.
