I admit I love the theatre – drama, comedy, musicals – you name it! Beyond the story and
beyond the acting, I’m always fascinated by what makes a live performance so special. I could
easily sit home and watch movies on Netflix or Amazon, but there’s something special about
live theatre. What pulls me in? What keeps me engaged? And what makes me feel different
after I leave the theatre from when I went in? I finally figured it out.
A few weeks ago, I got a behind-the-scenes look at what makes live theatre so special. And
what a look it was! North Coast Rep hosted a “Designer’s Showcase” featuring the magicians
who help turn a simple story into a work of art – the set designer, lighting designer, sound
designer, costume designer, and yes ... the wig designer. It was one of the most illuminating
evenings in the theatre and what I learned that evening is something I’ll take with me every
time I sit down, excited for a performance to begin.
As each presentation progressed, a theme appeared: Collaboration. Showcase attendees
quickly learned that theatre design is a collaborative art form. Designers work closely with
directors, playwrights, and actors to create a unified vision. This collaboration ensures that
every element, from the set to the costumes to the lighting and sound, works in harmony to tell
the story in the most compelling way possible. Lighting must be aware of its impact on costume
and wig colors. Sound must coordinate with lighting to ensure effects start and end together.
Costumes must coordinate with set design to ensure actors can easily move across the stage.
And wigs must work with the actors to be sure they’re comfortable in wearing what’s been
created for them! Collaboration begins from the moment the designers initially read the script
until the final dress rehearsal before opening night.
Theatre designers may not always be in the spotlight, but their contributions are essential to
the success of any production. Their creativity, technical skills, and dedication bring the magic
of theatre to life, allowing audiences to experience the wonder of live performance.
As I left North Coast Rep, I realized that the magic of live theatre lies not just in the
performances we see on stage, but in the intricate collaboration behind the scenes. The next
time you find yourself immersed in a theatrical performance, take a moment to appreciate the
unseen artists who make it all possible. Their collaborative efforts are what truly make the
theatre a place where collaboration meets innovation ... and artistry.
