What the Critics Say

  • This adaptation by Jean-Claude van Itallie is concise and sounds contemporary. And the actors each create distinct, well-rounded characters that bring a dimension to the fast-moving story. Directed by David Ellenstein with a top-notch cast, the production manages to find the tightrope balance between comedy and many of Chekhov’s usual dark subjects. As for the humor, it’s all there, and it works.
