It is said that a play takes place in three times at once. When the story is set; When it is written; and the moment it is performed.
When Heidi Schreck developed this mostly autobiographical play to be performed by herself over the course of ten years, times were changing. When she finally performed it in New York on Broadway in 2019 it took the city by storm, and it was already being perceived in ways she never knew it would be. It is, after all, her story and her experience and perspective. But the world keeps changing. So now, here in 2025, things resonate differently. Laws have changed, politics and attitudes have changed and our society is dealing with a reexamination of who we are as a country.
Our Constitution has been called a living document, and so too is a play that is performed in the moment of its time. There is a reason this play has been the most produced across America for the last three years. It seems to have its finger on the pulse of things that are going on in our country. It asks us to think and consider our own beliefs — but it does so with humor and kindness and so is an enjoyable and powerful theatre experience.
We are thrilled to be presenting the San Diego Premiere of this Pulitzer nominated play. We are delighted to welcome back the wonderful Jacque Wilke to our stage as Heidi, and to put the play in the capable hands of our director Shana Wride.
Thank you for taking the journey with us in What The Constitution Means To Me.
