The Cherry Orchard
By: Anton Chekhov, in a version by Jean-Claude van Itallie
Directed by: David Ellenstein
Anton Chekhov’s beloved masterwork is a rich tapestry of the human condition woven into a humorous and haunting tale. With universal themes of societal upheaval, love, loss, grief, envy, and ambition, THE CHERRY ORCHARD remains as relevant and powerful today as it was when it first premiered in 1903. Serious theatre-lovers will not want to miss this classic tale of heightened human drama.
This production is made possible by the generous support of Darlene Marcos Shiley.
This adaptation by Jean-Claude van Itallie is concise and sounds contemporary. And the actors each create distinct, well-rounded characters that bring a dimension to the fast-moving story. Directed by David Ellenstein with a top-notch cast, the production manages to find the tightrope balance between comedy and many of Chekhov’s usual dark subjects. As for the humor, it’s all there, and it works.
