2024 - 2025 Season > The Heart Sellers
San Diego Premiere
The Heart Sellers
By: Lloyd Suh
Directed by: Kat Yen
THE HEART SELLERS makes its San Diego premiere, offering a compelling portrayal of intelligent, curious, and creative women navigating the challenges of a new country, and highlighting the Asian immigrant experience. The play explores complex, emotionally charged themes within the human condition. Relationships, desires, and the intricacies of the heart are scrutinized with a blend of drama and humor that keeps audiences engaged. With strong character development and sharp dialogue, this heart-warming play invites compassion and insight about the complexities of the human heart.
The play is written in a way that allows for potent silences, which director Yen uses thoughtfully, and she has fostered great chemistry between her actors. As Luna, Young has boundless energy and talks incessantly to her first new friend. As Jane, Park is wide-eyed and reserved, but has a playful sense of humor. “The Heart Sellers” has resonated deeply with American theater audiences since its premiere in 2023 in Milwaukee. It ranked ninth on the list of the 10 most-produced plays in America in 2024. The play is pleasant and well-produced.
- The San Diego Union-Tribune
The Heart Sellers is frequently quite funny, and not at the expense of either Jane’s broken English or because of hapless sight gags in the kitchen. In fact, there’s far more laughter than tears in the storytelling. Young and Park are a pleasure to watch, animated and enjoying great chemistry as the two strangers who are destined to become BFFs.
- Stage West
In this North Coast Repertory production, Suh, Yen, Park, and Young remind us that theater’s power often lies not in spectacle but in its ability to distill human experience into its most elemental forms: a conversation, a connection, and the courage to hope for more.
- Vanguard Culture
Young and Park share strong on-stage chemistry, blending humor and emotion. North Coast Rep’s first 2025 play works as a funny and compassionate look at a meaningful connection between strangers. It is a pleasure to watch the blooming friendship grow between the delightful protagonists.
- San Diego Story
Both Jin and Marielle are flawless, but each with imprinted feeling, flare, and familiar references. They had a nice, sweet stage chemistry that was moving.
